ABSTRACT

The classified forest of Haut-Sassandra (FCHS) is located in the Central West of Ivory Coast, Three main communities (indigenous, non-indigenous and aliens) live around this protected area. A large part of people in the Haut-Sassandra region are highly dependent on the forest and these non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are an important source of income for these communities. The main objective of this study is to improve the knowledge about the importance of NTFPs for rural populations bordering the CFHS. From this point of view, surveys were conducted near 499 people including 86 indigenous, 336 non-indigenous and 77 Aliens. It comes out from these investigations that, 137 vegetable PFNL of which 13 are usually used at the indigenous, and 14 at the non-indigenous, were listed near these communities. In the aliens on the other hand, no PFNL was listed. Four (4) principal types of uses were identified at the Indigenous and non-indigenous communities. Moreover, these two communities have jointly six PFNL namely: Ricinodendron heudelotii (Euphorbiaceae), Elaeis guinensis (Arecaceae), Irvingia gabonensis (Irvinginaceae), Eremospatha hookeri (Arecaceae), Thaumatococcus danielii (Maranthaceae), as well as edible mushrooms such as Volvariella volvacea (Pluteaceae), Termitomyces letestui (Lyophyllaceae), Psathyrella tuberculata (Psathyrellaceae). For sustainable NTFP management, this study advocates the extension of conservation measures such as domestication, agroforestry systems etc. useful plants in order to guarantee their availability.
